During a debate at the Nebraska State Fair, Sen. Pete Ricketts and independent candidate Dan Osborn clashed over key issues. Ricketts repeatedly labeled Osborn as “Democrat Dan” and linked him to democratic socialists, setting the tone for what could be a closer-than-expected race in Nebraska.
This debate marks the beginning of a series of Senate contests nationwide. Despite Nebraska’s usual partisan leanings, Osborn’s challenge has caught attention. Having lost narrowly to Sen. Deb Fischer in 2024 while Trump secured Nebraska by 20 points, Osborn aims to present a centrist stance.
With nine weeks until Election Day, this debate may be the only direct encounter between Ricketts and Osborn. Throughout the debate, Osborn distanced himself from both major parties. He emphasized his independence, stating, “I don’t need to caucus with either party… it’s about delivering for Nebraska.”
Ricketts attacked Osborn for his backing of “Medicare for all” and his hypothetical opposition to Trump’s tax cuts. Osborn countered by highlighting the leverage he could garner as an independent, noting, “That would have been leverage to deliver for Nebraska.”
The debate also spotlighted campaign financing and PAC spending. Ricketts accused Osborn of relying on out-of-state funds and criticized his financial backers like Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Osborn admitted benefiting from anonymous donor contributions. “I don’t know who these people are,” he remarked, explaining that unidentified groups raise money on his behalf.
The debate was segmented into three parts, addressing tariffs and cost of living, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the war in Iran, and campaign financing with artificial intelligence.
