Train and School Bus Collision in Belgium Results in Four Fatalities

A tragic accident occurred early Tuesday involving a train collision with a school bus at a level-crossing near Buggenhout station, approximately 14 miles from Brussels.
Four individuals lost their lives in the unfortunate event, including two teenagers. The collision also claimed the lives of the bus driver and an adult accompanying the students, as reported by RTL TV, citing Transport Minister Jean-Luc Crucke. Two additional individuals sustained severe injuries.
Security footage reviewed by authorities showed that the crossing’s barriers were down at the time of the crash, according to Crucke.
Interior Minister Bernard Quintin expressed his deep sorrow regarding the incident on social media, noting the gravity of the tragedy that occurred in Buggenhout.
Despite inquiries, Belgian police have not provided further comments regarding the incident.
Belgium, known for its extensive railway network, has a history of level-crossing accidents. Infrabel, the railway infrastructure operator, reported that five fatalities due to such accidents were recorded in 2025, marking the lowest number since 2020.
