Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and far-left activist, recently celebrated Sen. Ed Markey’s victory in a primary battle against a younger, centrist opponent. Markey, who is 80 years old and a known progressive, defeated Rep. Seth Moulton, who emphasized the need for generational change.
Piker noted on social media that Democrat voters prioritize policies and progressive representation over age. Markey consistently portrayed himself as the race’s genuine progressive, questioning Moulton’s stance on progressivism while advocating for transgender rights, particularly in sports. This stance has often been avoided by many Democrats as they focus on gaining control of Congress.
“Trans athletes should be able to play,” Markey told The New York Times, stating it reflects Massachusetts’ values, unlike Moulton’s stance. Markey’s support for climate change legislation also resonated with groups appealing to younger audiences. The Sunrise Movement, an organization advocating for the Green New Deal, voiced their support following his win.
While Markey now garners backing from progressives, he had not always been a favorite among them. David Axelrod, a political consultant, highlighted Markey’s significant shift since his initial election to Congress 50 years ago. Markey, once a social conservative, now endorses high-profile progressive initiatives.
Sen. Bernie Sanders also recognized Markey’s triumph, emphasizing the need to confront wealth inequality and support working families. Following his primary win, Markey, backed by figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is favored in the upcoming general election in Massachusetts.
Markey’s last election showcased a decisive victory over Republican challenger Kevin O’Connor. His continued influence demonstrates the progressive movement’s sway within the party.
