For most thrift shoppers, finding a vintage band T-shirt is a rare thrill. Jordan Lee, known on TikTok as @jordanleecorman, specializes in uncovering donated band merchandise. He shared this talent with Newsweek, describing it as a strong suit.
In a TikTok video, Lee displayed his recent thrift store finds, including T-shirts featuring artists like Gwen Stefani and Interpol, as well as a John Cena WWE shirt. This left viewers pondering who donated such a collection.
Lee often discovers multiple pieces of band merchandise, leading him to joke about someone’s parent unknowingly donating their collection. For collectors, stumbling upon several related items can feel like hitting the jackpot, with each piece potentially revealing a part of a larger story.
Spotting a Collection
Lee explains that recognizing a collection involves identifying patterns. His background in music, particularly in genres like emo and post-hardcore, gives him the instinct to recognize these patterns. He notes that finding shirts of the same size and genre from a particular period suggests a single source.
Similar signs of wear can also indicate a personal music history, adding a narrative to the donation beyond the shirt itself.
Why Are Band Tees So Popular?
Band T-shirts have evolved into sought-after collectibles. According to Rockabilia, a band merchandise retailer, vintage shirts from the 1970s to the 1990s can fetch high prices. However, not all old shirts are valuable. Six factors affect a band’s shirt value: rarity, artist demand, tour or album significance, artwork, condition, and authenticity.
Lee considers these details when assessing a shirt’s interest. He examines the fabric, tag, stitching, tour year, design, and condition. Specific brands like Bay Island and Alstyle can hint at production dates.
Lee values shirts not only for potential price but also for their design or personal memories attached to them. A shirt might be valuable because of the artist’s significance to someone during a specific time in life.
The Merch He Still Hunts For
Lee’s passion for band merchandise is evident in the collections he desires. A memorable find was at a Goodwill in Washington State. He discovered pop-punk band shirts from The Wonder Years, Blink-182, and Alkaline Trio.
Though he found a significant collection, Lee chose only a couple of pieces, reminding others that not every find needs to be purchased. He has a soft spot for bands like Panic! At The Disco and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Panic! merchandise from 2005-2011 is part of his collection, and “Weird Al” was his first concert experience.
Lee’s advice for other thrift shoppers is to research artists, their merchandise, and even the garments’ details. He estimates leaving 75% of the merch he finds, valuing the effort of giving old items a new life. He searches for specific items like a Pretty. Odd. Panic! At The Disco hoodie for his girlfriend, ideally without steep prices.
