Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” suggesting it serves as a distraction from the ongoing war with Iran. Rogan’s remarks came during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with comedian Brian Simpson. Rogan, who has been vocal about the Trump administration’s involvement in Iran, argued that the focus on the new lake name diverts attention from what he considers an unwinnable conflict.
On August 27, Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal naming systems to use “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario. This change is limited to U.S. federal usage and does not affect Canada’s continued use of Lake Ontario or alter its international name. The decision coincides with strained U.S.-Canada relations and increasing trade tensions.
When Newsweek asked the White House about Rogan’s comments, spokeswoman Taylor Rogers stated, “Canada has been a bad neighbor by ripping off our country for years. President Trump promised voters that he would not allow our country to be taken advantage of anymore, which is why he is fighting so hard to protect American industries and workers. Thanks to the President’s bold leadership, we are putting America back on the map.”
Rogan expressed skepticism during his podcast, wondering, “To distract you from the fact that we’re in a war that we can’t win in Iran.” He questioned the logic of renaming the lake, stating, “Like who cares, it’s Lake Ontario, it’s a good name, we’ve had that name forever.” Rogan has consistently criticized Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict and suggested that Israel influenced the U.S. decision to enter the war.
The renaming of Lake Ontario has become a cultural and political issue. Google adopted “Lake America” for U.S. users while maintaining “Lake Ontario” for Canadian users, emphasizing the limited geographical impact of the name change.
Polling data reflects dissatisfaction with Trump’s management of the Iran conflict. A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll showed that 68 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran war and 54 percent disapprove of military actions in Iran. Only 25 percent believe he has managed the war very or somewhat well.
Similarly, a YouGov/Economist poll conducted last month indicated Trump’s approval rating on Iran was 30 percent, with 62 percent disapproval. Additionally, 25 percent support the war with Iran, compared to 57 percent who oppose it.
Regarding the lake name change, a YouGov/Economist survey revealed only 17 percent approval for the new name, while 68 percent disapprove. A Reuters/Ipsos poll echoed these findings, showing 14 percent support and 63 percent opposition.
