Chicago White Sox pitcher Sean Burke had a challenging start against the Houston Astros, walking the first two batters on Tuesday. A visit from pitching coach Zach Bove helped him regain focus. Burke responded by retiring the next three batters without allowing a run.
Burke found his rhythm for the remainder of the game, giving up only one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings, leading to a 5-1 victory at Daikin Park with 26,838 spectators. Despite not having his best pitches, Burke considered it one of his better starts.
“Today’s honestly, in my mind, one of the better starts I’ve had this year just because I obviously didn’t have my best stuff and had to kind of grind through that,” Burke said.
Burke struck out six, walked four, and threw 104 pitches. The only hit surrendered was a one-out double by Taylor Trammell in the fifth inning.
Burke’s performance impressed manager Will Venable, despite early struggles. Relievers Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, and Grant Taylor complemented Burke, limiting Houston to three hits.
With the win, the Sox maintained their lead in the American League Central. The Guardians, trailing by three games, won their game against Toronto on the same day.
Offensive Highlights
The White Sox delivered crucial two-out hits. Andrew Benintendi drove in Sam Antonacci with a single for the first run. Colson Montgomery followed with a two-run double. Randal Grichuk capped the scoring with a two-run double, extending the lead to 5-0.
“I never faced him before,” Grichuk remarked about the reliever he faced. “Saw a couple of heaters. Tried to let it get deep and luckily he put one out over the plate.”
The Sox improved offensively after struggling with runners in scoring position in their previous game. Manager Will Venable praised the team’s quality at-bats.
After a difficult outing against Texas where Burke issued eight walks, he bounced back effectively. Although he gave away some walks against Houston, Burke managed to keep the situation under control.
Burke credited catcher Drew Romo’s game-calling and the team’s offensive support for his improved performance. Romo helped Burke regain synchronization, and the offense provided a crucial lead.
