The Justice Department is investigating major U.S. retailers over rising consumer beef prices. The Trump administration is focusing on reducing costs for one of America’s essential grocery items.
On Tuesday, the department’s Antitrust Division announced the expansion of its investigation into beef costs, which have increased by about 10 percent over the last year. The inquiry now includes eight American chains. Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. sent letters to Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize USA, Costco, and Amazon, addressing the recent retail price hikes for beef.
The DOJ emphasized that beef prices are crucial for Americans and a priority for the department in a statement released on X. Newsweek has reached out to the Justice Department for more details on the investigation.
This development came after the department initiated an antitrust investigation into the country’s “big four” meatpackers. President Donald Trump previously accused these entities of engaging in “Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation.”
The administration has also implemented other measures to lower costs, including a plan effective September 1 that allows 300,000 metric tons of beef from eligible countries to enter the U.S. without tariffs. This initiative aims to significantly reduce prices but has faced criticism from ranchers and lawmakers in U.S. farming states.
This is an evolving story, and further updates will be provided.
