Thai authorities conducted a major crackdown on prostitution in Pattaya, targeting the tourist hub as approximately 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines were set to arrive. This operation resulted in the detention of between 40 and 50 individuals over the weekend, according to reports from Reuters and local media sources.
The USS Abraham Lincoln reached eastern Thailand on Wednesday, marking the end of an unprecedented continuous deployment at sea which lasted over 200 days. This extensive period prompted concerns regarding conditions and mental health of the crew, with U.S. lawmakers advocating for inquiries into these matters. Initially deployed in the South China Sea, the ship was redirected to the Middle East in January to support U.S. operations against Iran.
During their stay in Thailand, the visiting sailors and Marines are expected to spend four days in Pattaya before heading back to San Diego, the carrier’s home port. Pattaya, known for its vibrant nightlife, has a history of visible sex tourism despite the legal prohibition of prostitution in Thailand. Advocacy groups and officials recognize the challenge in fully policing these activities.
Pattaya Police Chief Anek Srathongyoo stated, “We are doing our best, but it is difficult,” while commenting on ongoing efforts to manage the situation. Police, along with local officials, executed a late-night inspection of popular areas, including the beach, on August 29, as reported by The Pattaya Mail.
