A 19-year-old resident of Beverly Hills faces murder charges after a violent confrontation in an alleyway on Sunday night resulted in a man’s death. The incident has left residents of the affluent area seeking answers.
The suspect, Conoray Lawantara, was arrested by the Beverly Hills Police Department on Monday and charged with murder on Wednesday. The L.A. County district attorney’s office confirmed the charge.
Police received reports of a disturbance just before midnight on Sunday in the 400 block of North Palm Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man with neck wounds. The victim was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries. His identity has not been released.
Brigette Barbie, a witness, told The Times that she heard distress sounds and saw a man, apparently homeless, bleeding heavily. She recorded a video showing Lawantara, with bloodied hands, handcuffed and claiming self-defense. The footage shows officers attempting CPR on the injured man.
I didn’t reach for him first, he reached for me, his hand went to my leg,
Lawantara stated in the video. He mentioned using a 3.9-inch knife, referred to as a concealed carry weapon (CCW). An officer questioned the location of the knife, to which Lawantara responded, indicating it was nearby.
Lawantara alleged the man continued to approach him even after the knife was drawn. He also claimed he sustained a stab wound and a bitten finger during the encounter. He later received medical care at a hospital.
Barbie described Lawantara as a new resident who became infuriated by the other man’s actions, which involved going through trash bins. She called the incident savage as hell, expressing disbelief and concern over the violent act.
Neighbours expressed fear and curiosity about Lawantara’s presence in the neighborhood, questioning his motives.
Lawantara has not yet faced arraignment. He was still under hospital care as of Monday evening. Beverly Hills Police have not disclosed further details about Lawantara’s condition, confirmed the victim’s homelessness, or explained the fight’s origins.
