Postseason Hopes in Northwest Indiana
As the postseason begins, several teams in Northwest Indiana are strong contenders for state titles, including Crown Point, Chesterton, Andrean, and Kouts.
Duneland Athletic Conference’s Potential for Success
The Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) has witnessed victories in the Class 4A state title for two consecutive seasons. Crown Point, reaching a 24-5 overall and 11-3 in the conference, holds the No. 3 spot in the state coaches poll. Coach Steve Strayer shared the team’s journey, which started strong, encountered a midseason lull, but now sees an uptick as the postseason approaches.
Key players include Sean Dunlap, a Tennessee recruit, with a .471 batting average, nine home runs, and 44 RBIs. Caden Matusak, a Michigan recruit, boasts a .422 batting average. Logan Johnston leads pitching, with a 1.25 ERA and 60 strikeouts.
Chesterton, ranked No. 4, won the conference title, its first since 2017. They are led by Rob Czarniecki and Troy Barrett, both top performers in batting and pitching, with Barrett achieving a 10-0 record and a 0.48 ERA.
Valparaiso and Lake Central’s Aspirations
Valparaiso, holding a record of 20-7 and 11-3 in the conference, seeks consecutive titles. They are led by DJ Malloy and Trent Gill, who excel in batting averages and base-stealing capabilities.
Lake Central, two seasons past their last state title, begins the Crown Point Sectional against Munster. They display strength with players like Brayden Walls, who maintains a .449 batting average.
Andrean’s Quest for Record Title
Andrean, co-champions of the Northwest Crossroads Conference, aims for their 10th state title. The team, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, has faced losses only to Highland and Hobart, and might meet Hanover Central in the Sectional championship.
Kouts’ Continued Success
Kouts, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, has achieved 25 straight victories after an initial loss. Players like Billy Miller, Landon Garrett, and Jesse Overholt lead the team with impressive batting averages and ERA records.
Dark Horse Portage’s Potential
Portage, with a 14-14 record, competes in a tough sectional. Though considered an underdog, their experienced senior class has been a cornerstone for the program’s standards under Coach Shane Prance.
