Island Found After Mysterious Disappearance
A floating island has been discovered after it vanished from Canada’s Williston Reservoir. BC Hydro announced that the island drifted approximately 30 kilometers over 15 days, appearing along the shoreline of the Ospika Arm.
Location Tracking
The island’s movement captured international attention when it first surfaced near Finlay Bay and then disappeared. BC Hydro found the island using satellite imagery, aircraft observations, and boater reports.
We found the island. Turns out it wasn’t missing. Just drifting.
Satellite data from August 15 showed the island displaced from its initial location, with the position confirmed by BC Hydro on August 31.
Understanding Floating Islands
Floating islands consist of vegetation, soil, and organic matter that can support trees and plant life. Larger islands like this one are rare.
Researchers are investigating the formation and movement of such islands, which may arise from accumulated logs and debris decomposing and stabilizing over time.
Details on the Island’s Journey
The island traveled 30 kilometers from Finlay Bay. Satellite imagery helped track its progress, revealing its new location weeks later.
BC Hydro estimates the island’s dimensions at 459 feet long and 230 feet wide, covering nearly 9,800 square meters.
Island Access and Safety Concerns
Visitors can photograph the island but are advised against landing on it due to instability from its composition of logs and debris.
BC Hydro continues monitoring the island, offering insights into its formation and movement.
