Democratic Representative Chris Pappas faces challenges in New Hampshire’s U.S. Senate race against former Republican Senator John Sununu. Both are expected to secure their party nominations next week to succeed retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen in the midterms.
Republicans consider New Hampshire a potential win because of Sununu, who previously served as Senator from 2003 to 2009. Although the state leaned Democratic in the last presidential election, Sununu’s candidacy presents a possible pickup opportunity. However, Democrats are counting on Pappas, who represents a swing district, to gain voter support, especially due to national dissatisfaction with former President Donald Trump.
Recent Polling Data
Two recent polls indicate Sununu has a slight edge over Pappas. Despite this, forecasters still give Democrats a slight advantage overall. Sununu’s lead acts as a warning sign for Democrats trying to gain a Senate majority.
Pappas’ campaign manager, Rachel Petri, stated that voters can distinguish between a candidate who actively engages with voters and one who remains distant. She criticized Sununu for relying on external funding rather than direct voter interaction.
Sununu’s campaign has not commented directly on the recent polls. The latest survey by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates, a GOP pollster, shows Sununu at 37% and Pappas at 36%. A University of New Hampshire poll mirrored these results, displaying Sununu at a slight lead. Other candidates showed minimal support.
Pappas has led against other Republicans such as Scott Brown in prior surveys, demonstrating varied polling across different groups.
Polling Trends and Issues
Earlier polls suggested Pappas had the lead, though recent data reflects a tightening race. Saint Anselm College polls once showed Pappas ahead by 7 points, though GOP internal polls indicated closer margins.
Both candidates focus heavily on affordability and living costs. Pappas highlights healthcare and anti-corruption efforts. Sununu, while agreeing on affordability, criticizes the handling of international conflicts more than his Republican rival, Scott Brown.
Primary and Election Dynamics
The New Hampshire primary is scheduled for September 8. Among Republicans, Sununu is ahead in polls and has secured Trump’s endorsement. Pappas leads in primary challenges from within his party, including against progressive Karishma Manzur.
Prediction markets strongly favor a Democratic win in New Hampshire. Current trading outcomes suggest an 83-84% chance of victory for Democrats despite close polls.
Impact on Senate Control
A Republican win in New Hampshire would complicate Democratic efforts to control the Senate. Holding a 53-47 majority, Republicans set the stage for challenging Democrats, who need to gain four seats for a Senate majority. Besides defending swing state seats, Democrats aim to flip GOP-held seats in other significant states.
New Hampshire presents a unique challenge, historically backing Republican governors but leaning Democratic in federal elections. Winning independents and appealing to the state’s politically diverse population might be crucial for either party.
Out of the state’s registered voters, many are independents, making them vital for both major parties come November.
