Federal prosecutors have charged a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer with providing false information to investigators. The charges stem from a January incident where the officer allegedly wounded a Venezuelan man during an immigration operation in Minneapolis.
The officer, Christian Castro, is accused of shooting Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg. He now faces federal charges after authorities discovered video evidence that contradicted his initial statements. This development is part of a broader investigation that has led prosecutors to dismiss charges against Sosa-Celis.
Reports indicate there are internal disagreements within the Justice Department regarding the pursuit of additional civil rights charges in the case.
Newsweek contacted the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for comments on the matter. The Department of Homeland Security directed Newsweek to the Department of Justice.
