ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has expressed concerns about the influence of far-left streamer Hasan Piker on the Democratic Party. In a discussion with POLITICO host Dasha Burns, Smith warned that Piker could be a liability for Democrats beyond their progressive base, providing Republicans with the opportunity to criticize candidates associated with him.
Smith stated, “It’s a negative because I think over the long haul from a general populist perspective, it’s going to contaminate the electorate on the left side of the aisle. It’s going to come back to haunt them.” Smith emphasized that Piker’s growing influence in political circles poses a risk to Democratic candidates.
ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith warned Hasan Piker’s growing influence could “contaminate” Democrats and “come back to haunt them.”
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has already focused on Piker’s connections to Democratic candidates. RNC national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre criticized Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed for his association with Piker, labeling El-Sayed a “terrorist sympathizer.” Baldassarre argued, “Democrats’ refusal to disavow this clown shows they either share his poisonous ideology or they’re too cowardly to confront it.”
Piker’s association has become a significant issue in Michigan’s Senate race, where a Fox News poll shows Republican nominee Mike Rogers leading El-Sayed. Support for El-Sayed varies among different Democratic groups. While he maintains strong backing from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), support among non-DSA Democrats and independents is lower.
El-Sayed defended his engagement with Piker’s audience, emphasizing the importance of drawing in Piker’s followers, which he estimates at “three million people.” He argued for creating electoral pathways that align on shared goals.
Smith summarized El-Sayed’s strategy as an effort to win over Piker’s audience rather than an endorsement of the streamer personally.
Fox News Digital reported that El-Sayed attempted to distance his campaign from Piker following backlash over previous comments by the streamer. While Piker endorsed El-Sayed and appeared at various campaign events, the controversy surrounding him continues.
Despite the contentious nature of Piker’s past remarks, including retracting a statement about “America deserved 9/11” and controversial comments about Israel and American Jews, he remains a polarizing figure with significant reach among young, progressive voters.
