Uber has announced a sudden halt to its operations in Nigeria, a move that follows various operational challenges and the impact of high oil prices. This decision significantly reduces the presence of the ride-hailing giant in Africa.
The announcement came as a surprise on Wednesday, affecting the company’s activities in Nigeria, which is known for being the continent’s most populous nation and its third-largest economy. For over 12 years, Uber had established itself in Nigeria, serving as a prominent ride-hailing service.
San Francisco-based Uber did not specify how many of its active drivers in Nigeria would be impacted by this decision. However, many drivers reported learning about the termination of services at the same time as the public, with minimal notice from the company.
Passengers also experienced abrupt disruptions. According to reports from local media, some commuters were disturbed while using Uber services, receiving immediate notifications about the shutdown mid-journey.
