Russian commentator Vladimir Solovyov made headlines with his recent broadcast, where he threatened NATO with aggressive action. According to Julia Davis from Russia Media Monitor, Solovyov’s statements on his radio and online show, Full Contact, seemed excessively radical even for his usual audience. Davis shared a clip from Solovyov’s program via the social media platform X, noting Norway’s seizure of a Russian ship in Svalbard at Ukraine’s request led Solovyov to call for drastic measures.
Angry at the seizure, Solovyov suggested deploying Russian troops to NATO-member Norway’s border and severing relations with Germany and the European Union. His provocative comments included, “We spit on NATO, bomb the hell out of it.”
A segment of the show aired live but was not published by state media outlets and labeled as “deleted broadcast, recorded live.” Davis noted this in her post alongside the video.
Despite unclear state media censorship of these remarks, Solovyov’s version of the program appeared on yapolitic.ru, a site known for state broadcasts. Newsweek sought comments from Solovyov Live, Solovyov’s media platform.
Threats Against Germany
Solovyov is known for framing the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war against NATO, frequently advocating for attacks on Western nations, including nuclear strikes, without direct Kremlin endorsement. During his broadcast, he labeled the West’s ideology as “European Nazism” and “Satanism.”
Russian officials have used “denazification” as a pretext for the Ukraine invasion, a notion widely rejected by Kyiv and the international community.
Solovyov dismissed Russia’s alleged connection to a drone incident near Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany as “laughable.” German officials attributed the incident to Russian operations, citing luck as the reason for avoiding significant damage. An Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) analyst stated Germany was the most targeted country in Western Europe’s hybrid warfare movement in 2025.
The incident, as per German officials, fits within a broader Russian strategy of hybrid operations across Europe. Joel Crisetig from ACLED remarked on the timing, linking Moscow’s hybrid warfare escalation to the accusations against Russia.
Norway’s Ship Seizure
Norway, closely bordering Russia, seized the Russian ship Professor Molchanov in Svalbard following a request by Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz. This act prompted accusations of piracy from Moscow after an arbitration ruling required Russia to compensate Naftogaz for expropriated assets post-Crimea’s 2014 annexation.
The vessel remains at port under a Norwegian court’s order. Solovyov condemned the seizure by Norway, spurred by “shady Ukrainian Nazi structures.” He called for the Russian Navy and possibly aviation to reclaim the ship by force, reiterating his aggressive stance against NATO.
Newsweek editors John Fitzpatrick and Cristina Diciu have been contacted for commentary on the situation.
