Israel Faces Water Crisis as Desalination Plants Shut Down

Israel is experiencing a significant water crisis. Five out of six desalination plants have been shut down this week due to microscopic algae blocking the intake pipes in the Mediterranean Sea. These facilities are crucial as they provide a substantial portion of the nation’s water supply.

Experts are raising concerns about the potential causes of this disruption. One possibility is the untreated wastewater from Gaza’s damaged sewage systems. This situation has exacerbated the problem, suggesting a link between the wastewater and the current algae bloom.

Residents in Gaza City witnessed an Israeli strike on a water desalination plant on August 24. The situation in Gaza further complicates the region’s water management issues.
