Controversial Alliance in Senate Campaign
Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Senate hopeful in Michigan, has maintained an alliance with Hasan Piker, a left-wing influencer known for making offensive comments about 9/11 and antisemitism. Piker’s remarks include stating that America deserved 9/11, which has sparked concerns among some Democrats who fear that such associations might alienate swing voters during the crucial Michigan Senate race in the midterms.
Campaign Events on 9/11 Anniversary
As Americans prepared for the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, El-Sayed’s campaign schedule notably omitted mention of any remembrance event. Instead, he was listed to attend various community events including a Mexican festival, a farmers market, and a county fair. Following inquiries, his campaign clarified that he would be attending a 9/11 memorial event, although it was not originally listed on his campaign website. These events, such as the Fiesta Mexicana, are framed as celebrations of culture, with music, food, dance, and vendors.
“The September 11th terrorist attacks were an evil attack on America’s freedom and he will be joining Michiganders in remembering the 25th anniversary.” – El-Sayed’s spokeswoman
Past Remarks Stir Controversy
El-Sayed’s previous statements have added complexity to his relationship with the legacy of 9/11. Earlier in his campaign, a partnership with Hasan Piker led to renewed scrutiny after Piker’s past comments re-emerged. When questioned, El-Sayed labeled the statement as “dumb” but did not formally disavow Piker.
Moreover, El-Sayed faced criticism for past writings and social media posts. These include comparisons between the 9/11 attacks and the January 6 Capitol event, as well as equating President Donald Trump with Osama bin Laden. His social media calls for Americans to approach the COVID-19 pandemic with similar outrage to the 9/11 attacks have also drawn backlash.
