The Trump administration has allocated a $2.7 million contract to a Massachusetts company to address the persistent algae issue at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. Government records show that American Ag Energy, Inc. has been given the task to manage this problem, which resurfaced following President Donald Trump’s substantial refurbishment efforts before July 4.
This contract covers various aspects, such as maintenance, repair, and replacement of equipment, in addition to water purification and sewage treatment at the site. According to NBC 4 Washington, the project’s goals include eliminating algae blooms on the pool’s surface.
The new contractors are thoroughly conducting biological and chemical testing to identify the root causes of the problem and the environmental factors involved. Only once this thorough analysis is completed will they implement changes aimed at preventing further algae blooms or stagnant water issues.
Reflecting Pool Problems Despite Renovations
Algae growth, leaks, and water quality have long been challenges for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. A significant $30 million rehabilitation project during the Obama administration in 2012 added a new circulation and filtration system. However, algae reappeared shortly after refilling.
The shallow and sun-exposed pool creates ideal conditions for algae growth, complicating the task of maintaining not only a visually appealing surface but also preventing algae. The latest renovation aimed to address these maintenance issues and alter the pool’s appearance to a more vivid blue. Nonetheless, the project encountered immediate difficulties with algae returning quickly and the original coating beginning to deteriorate.
The Trump administration suggested vandalism caused these problems, though the Department of Justice attributed the damage to poor workmanship after dropping charges against a suspect.
Financial Overview of the Reflecting Pool Renovation Efforts
Since the 2012 reconstruction, major disclosed spending on the Reflecting Pool amounts to approximately $49.9 million. This covers various contracts from different years, including:
- 2010-2012 reconstruction: $30.7 million
- 2026: a series of contracts with Atlantic Industrial Coatings totaling about $14.6 million
- 2026: Greenwater Services for algae treatment, approximately $1.7-$1.8 million
- 2026: American Ag Energy repair contract, $2.7 million
This financial expenditure is notable, comparable to funding numerous teachers for a year, providing millions of school lunches, or acquiring about 100 median-priced American homes.
The public perspective shows division, with a June 2026 Economist/YouGov poll indicating that 49 percent of Americans disapproved of the renovation efforts versus 31 percent who approved. This signals an 18-point gap favoring disapproval.
Part of Trump’s Broader Campaign
The new contract is part of a wider Trump administration effort to restore federal landmarks in Washington, D.C., for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. Trump has advocated for enhanced restoration efforts on multiple monuments and public spaces to present Washington as a showcase for the U.S. amidst this anniversary.
Initially projected by Trump to cost around $1.5 million, the Reflecting Pool project’s costs increased beyond $16 million with additional repairs and water treatment initiatives. The administration stated the necessity to address longstanding issues previous renovations left unsolved, whereas critics questioned the use of no-bid contracts and additional taxpayer expense.
Future Prospects
As lawmakers, watchdogs, and taxpayers continue to evaluate the project, scrutiny will persist around the renovation efforts, whose costs reached nearly $20 million in 2026 alone. The outcome of the latest measures will likely influence decisions on further federal investment.
