Texas Christian University (TCU) has reversed its decision, restoring press credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. This decision comes after the credentials were withdrawn last week, just days ahead of the team’s season start.
The Horned Frogs began their season abroad in Dublin, Ireland, against the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, coached by Bill Belichick. Star-Telegram reporter Steven Johnson had to report from the stands due to the credential revocation. The university’s decision followed a report on a locker room incident involving senior safety Jacob Fields, who was subsequently dismissed from the team.
The Horned Frogs’ opener took place at Aer Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
Ironically, TCU’s home games occur at Amon G. Carter Stadium, named after the Star-Telegram’s founder and publisher. However, TCU has since reinstated the outlet’s credentials.
TCU Athletics released a statement saying: “Today, TCU Athletics fully restored media credentials to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Through productive discussions, we clarified our position and resolved to move forward. We respect their role as an independent news source and voice in our community.” This indicates a resolution has been reached.
Despite the diplomatic resolution, TCU lost their opening game against UNC with a score of 15-10. The team is preparing to play against the Grambling State Tigers on September 12, when they will return to Amon G. Carter Stadium.
