Michigan’s political stage for the 2026 Senate race becomes more contentious as Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive nominee, faces strong criticism over his platform. Florida Representative Kat Cammack fiercely criticizes El-Sayed’s approach, comparing it to a used car sales tactic. She warns that his policies might financially burden working-class families while delivering unfulfilled promises.
Since launching his Senate campaign in April 2025, El-Sayed has attempted to present himself as a moderate. He has distanced himself from earlier progressive positions and removed left-wing content he previously endorsed from public view. While affirming he is not a socialist, El-Sayed remains linked with political allies and supporters who hold controversial or far-left views.
“Abdul has made clear that no one speaks for his campaign besides himself and his campaign spokespeople,” says Cole Wozniak, El-Sayed campaign spokesperson, highlighting their attempt to counteract the narrative pushed by Republicans regarding El-Sayed’s affiliations.
The Republicans, focusing on El-Sayed’s associations with controversial figures, have intensified their campaign narrative against him. However, El-Sayed’s team counters by pointing out allegations against GOP nominee Mike Rogers, whose campaign associates have expressed controversial opinions on various issues.
El-Sayed’s Relationship with Socialists
El-Sayed emphasizes his belief in regulated capitalism. Nonetheless, his campaign enjoys support from prominent socialists in American politics, including Senator Bernie Sanders, Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Summer Lee, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His long-standing connection with the Democratic Socialists of America raises questions among his critics.
Between 2017 and 2020, El-Sayed participated in six events organized by chapters of the Democratic Socialists of America. Despite distancing himself amidst the Senate race, DSA leaders have indicated their support for El-Sayed’s campaign.
Other Controversial Connections
El-Sayed’s campaign also faces scrutiny over affiliations with individuals perceived as having radical views. William Lawrence, who campaigned alongside El-Sayed, made statements about altering the American way of life. Moreover, El-Sayed’s appearances with religious figures like Imam Hassan Qazwini and Sheikh Fadhel al-Sahlani, both of whom have controversial records, have fuelled criticism.
These figures have been involved in making anti-Israel statements, supporting resistance movements, and downplaying the Holocaust. Despite these associations, El-Sayed maintains a strong connection with the Arab American community in Michigan, contributing to his victory in the Democratic primary.
Nation of Islam Associations
El-Sayed’s interactions with individuals affiliated with the Nation of Islam further complicate his political image. These associations, given the organization’s controversial teachings about racial superiority and its leader Louis Farrakhan’s infamous remarks, present more challenges for El-Sayed’s campaign.
Figures like Marcus Muhammad, who have ties with the Nation of Islam, have been seen supporting El-Sayed publicly. Despite this, El-Sayed continues to garner support from various community leaders in Detroit.
Critics leverage these associations against El-Sayed, drawing attention to his proximity to extremist figures. Meanwhile, El-Sayed’s campaign highlights allegations against his opponent Mike Rogers, portraying Rogers as an individual with questionable ethical stances.
Republicans hope to capitalize on these controversies and attract defections from Jewish Democrats, affecting El-Sayed’s base of support as the election nears.
