Labor Union Approval and Membership Discrepancy

Labor union membership has seen a sharp decline in developed countries, while worker earnings are on the rise. According to a statement on September 6, 2026, approval ratings for labor unions are nearing a historical peak. A recent Gallup poll indicates that 71 percent of Americans hold favorable views of labor unions. However, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that only 10 percent of U.S. workers are union members, reflecting a historical low.
What is causing this disparity?
Gallup’s polling did not inquire if individuals wanted to personally become union members. Although in 2022, the union approval ratings were similar, Gallup included questions for nonunion workers about their interest in joining a union.
The data suggests a gap between approval and action regarding union membership. This disconnect warrants further examination to understand why more workers aren’t joining despite expressing positive opinions about labor unions.
