Junior running back Michael Williams is emerging as a vital component in West Aurora’s dynamic ground game. His rise is timely, complementing senior Bryce Riley, who remains the top choice for coach Nate Eimer. While Riley stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs 175 pounds, Williams, 5-foot-7 and 155 pounds, is proving himself as a genuine breakaway threat.
Williams expressed enthusiasm, stating, The best running back duo in the state.
He and Riley collaborated throughout the summer, with Riley imparting wisdom and enhancing Williams’ on-field intelligence. Williams shared how this mentorship elevated his skills, emphasizing the impact on his performance.
On a hot Friday night, both Williams and Riley delivered outstanding performances, each surpassing 100 rushing yards. Their contributions were crucial in West Aurora’s 49-21 victory against Streamwood in the Upstate Eight West. Although Williams received his first touch late in the second quarter, he showcased brilliance with a 41-yard touchdown following a 9-yard run. His cutback move resonated with Riley’s exceptional carries, contributing to a 28-14 halftime lead.
The halftime break extended to 90 minutes due to adverse weather conditions, with lightning detected north of the stadium. Coach Eimer, valuing the running duo’s efficiency, minimized senior quarterback Tyler Fecht’s passes, focusing on what was effective. We’ve got a 1-2 punch and you have to use it,
said Eimer.
Williams excelled in the second half, amassing 144 yards over 10 carries, including two more touchdowns. His contributions propelled West Aurora past the Sabres. Eimer praised Williams’ ability to inspire the team during flat moments, remarking, Mike’s special. He gave us a spark when we needed it.
Williams’ teammate, Riley, embraces his senior leadership role for the Blackhawks, a team with limited experience. He acknowledged Williams’ growth potential despite external perceptions of his size, stating, He’s a nice back and good to have in the backfield with me.
Both players, showcased exceptional moments during the game. Riley accumulated 232 all-purpose yards and initiated momentum early with touchdown runs of 42 and 46 yards, following up with an 88-yard kickoff return.
Riley’s season rushing total reached 459 yards after the game, having delivered 144 yards on ten carries. He noted the team’s preparation for kick returns during indoor sessions, understanding Streamwood’s tactics and seizing opportunities.
Williams, meanwhile, remains unfazed by size concerns, focusing on adapting to varsity play. He summarizes his journey, acknowledging the challenges but embracing his history of overcoming them.
