The explosion occurred on Saturday night adjacent to the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church. This municipality, situated in central Mexico and home to 66,000 residents, was in preparation for a fireworks display, a staple of the religious festival.

Temascalcingo is approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. Attendees were gathered for festivities honoring the Virgin of the Light when the blast occurred, leading to chaos and mourning in the community of Santa Maria Canchesda on September 6, 2026.

The cause of the explosion remains unidentified. The Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation into the matter. Among the injured are two priests, as mentioned by a local bishop.

A similar incident occurred almost four years ago in Huejutla, a municipality in the state of Hidalgo, where 17 people sustained injuries due to a powerful fireworks explosion.
