The FAA announced plans to investigate the cause of the crash.
Local fire officials confirmed the presence of ‘multiple patients,’ however, specifics about fatalities remain unclear. A video circulating on social media displays the Amazon Prime Air plane, a Boeing 767, positioned off the runway, with its tail extended over a fence and thick black smoke billowing from the aircraft.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue indicated ‘multiple patients’ and mentioned ongoing efforts to extinguish the aircraft fire. Over 60 MDFR units responded to what was described as an active scene. The cargo plane exceeded a runway after landing at the airport around 2 p.m., as stated by the FAA in a communication to NPR.
The plane initially took off from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department noted the plane surpassed the diagonal runway, rendering it immobile at the northwest section of the airport.
‘As of 3:00 p.m., all runways and taxiways at MIA remain closed,’ stated the department. The FAA issued a ground stop for planes until 3 p.m. This was later extended until 5:30 p.m. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the ground stop to facilitate first responders in evaluating the scene, warning travelers of ‘significant delays and potential cancellations.’
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel indicated that at the time of the crash, the plane was operated by the contract cargo carrier 21 Air. Nantel expressed on social media, ‘This situation is evolving quickly, and we’re still collecting information. We’re collaborating closely with local authorities and officials to comprehend exactly what transpired.’
‘Ensuring the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved is our utmost priority,’ Nantel emphasized. ‘We’re doing everything possible to assist those impacted.’
