Understanding the Latest Social Security Payment Updates
Social Security payments are crucial for over 75 million Americans, providing retirement, spousal, survivor, or disability benefits. Payments are distributed monthly, but not simultaneously for all recipients. The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a staggered schedule, based on factors like birth date and benefit type.
Payment Schedule for September
This week, Social Security recipients with birthdays from the 1st to the 10th of any month will receive their payment on Wednesday, September 9. These payments are intended for retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is distributed earlier, at the month’s start. Those receiving both SSI and another benefit should have received their payment by Thursday, September 3.
Additional Payment Dates
If your September payment is pending, two more payment dates are scheduled:
- Wednesday, September 16: Payments for birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, September 23: Payments for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
Payment Variations
Social Security retirement payments vary based on lifetime earnings and when benefits start. By 2026, the maximum retirement benefit will be $4,152 monthly for those retiring at full retirement age with maximum earnings. Those starting benefits at 62 will receive up to $2,969, while waiting until 70 increases it to $5,181 monthly. The full retirement age reaches 67 for those turning 62 in 2026.
As of July 2026, the average retired worker receives $2,085.98 monthly. The average benefit for all beneficiaries, including retirees, survivors, and disabled individuals, is $1,940.08. Disabled workers average $1,635.27, and non-disabled widows and widowers receive $1,932.74.
Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2027
Upcoming inflation data will influence Social Security payments for 2027. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will release Consumer Price Index figures for August on September 11. These figures contribute to the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) determination. Current forecasts by The Senior Citizens League predict a 3.6% increase, while AARP foresees 3.5% for 2027. This exceeds the 2.8% COLA of 2026. Final adjustments depend on August and September inflation.
The SSA calculates COLA using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The average CPI-W for July, August, and September is compared annually; the increase determines the COLA. If prices remain stable, there is no COLA. The BLS will publish September’s inflation report on October 14, finalizing the 2027 COLA. The increase affects payments for December 2026, received in January 2027.
