Macklemore sparked a major controversy after proclaiming “Free Palestine” during Ed Sheeran’s New Jersey concerts, while performing his protest song ‘Hind’s Hall’ with images of Gaza displayed at MetLife Stadium. His actions led to criticism from pro-Israel groups, backing from celebrities like P!nk, and a renewed examination of artists’ roles in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Audience members are urging Ed Sheeran to reconsider Macklemore’s participation in the remaining U.S. tour dates, which opens a discussion on artistic freedom and audience expectations amid a divisive issue.
Reactions and Feedback
The Israeli-American Council (IAC), which represents over 150,000 Israeli-Americans, started a petition labeling Macklemore’s performance as promoting a “one-sided political agenda.” They urged Sheeran to disclose if the political elements were approved. P!nk further highlighted the debate by sharing StopAntisemitism’s criticism, although she did not explain her stance. Newsweek has contacted Ed Sheeran and Macklemore’s teams for comments.
During his opening act on September 4 and 5, Macklemore explained his aim to highlight Palestinian issues as part of his involvement in Sheeran’s tour. He sang “Hind’s Hall,” inspired by pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia University, while projecting Gaza images on stage. Supporters defend Macklemore’s longstanding advocacy for Gaza, asserting his use of artistic voice against injustice.
I’ve been working on expressing this message. Touring with Ed allowed me to voice ‘Free Palestine’ prominently, reminding those in Gaza and the West Bank they are not forgotten,” Macklemore stated. “This song was inspired by Columbia University’s student movement and their courage to stand against the odds. My call is for peace and human dignity for all.”
Macklemore further clarified that criticizing Israel’s actions is not an attack on Jewish individuals, calling for a universal demand for justice, equality, and freedom.
Analysis of the Conflict
The conflict Macklemore references started with a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, causing around 1,200 Israeli deaths, alongside over 5,400 injuries. Additionally, 200 hostages were taken to Gaza. As hostilities continued, more than 2,000 Israelis have died, including civilians and security personnel. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 74,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023, with an overall casualty figure of 76,621 when considering fatalities across the region. A study reveals that women and children represent 70% of Palestinians killed in residential buildings.
The broader crisis includes indirect deaths from lack of essential services. Reports from 2025 and 2026 indicate Gaza’s actual death toll might exceed 100,000, equating to about 4-5% of its pre-war population. By 2024, famine conditions left 2.2 million Gazans in critical food insecurity; by 2025, the entire region faced this dire situation. Meanwhile, the West Bank has recorded over 1,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023.
Although a ceasefire in October 2025 allowed some relief with aid and partial hostage releases, accusations of violations persist, with violence erupting occasionally in Gaza, the West Bank, and southern Lebanon.
Future of Ed Sheeran’s Tour
The IAC petition asks Sheeran to clarify if Macklemore’s political messaging had approval and to set guidelines for future content. There has been no official statement from Sheeran’s camp. As of now, Macklemore remains a part of the tour, which continues on September 19 in Philadelphia.
