On Thursday, the SEC, led by commissioner Greg Sankey, acted decisively to prevent former NFL players from joining LSU’s roster. This move was made just before the regular season begins.
The SEC emphasized the importance of maintaining clear boundaries in college athletics. It insisted that members should avoid adding players who have previously signed with professional teams. Traditionally, the rule was straightforward. Signing a contract with a professional team marked the end of an athlete’s NCAA eligibility.
Prior to facing Clemson in their season opener on Saturday, LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin agreed not to include Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris in their 105-man roster.
“What happened down there has left a stain on this league,” said ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum. “I know it’s not going to happen, and it probably shouldn’t happen, but if the presidents of the SEC took a vote today, they very well might vote to kick LSU out of the league. And I can tell you, fans out there would not be the least bit upset by it.”
Finebaum expressed a strong opinion during his appearance on SEC Nation. He mentioned that the situation could lead to a vote to expel LSU from the conference, reflecting some members’ serious stance on the issue.
Criticism was directed at Kiffin, whom Finebaum referred to as a “child.” He also pointed out LSU’s leadership for failing to manage their first-year coach. Sankey was praised for his role in maintaining the SEC’s integrity.
“In a week of utter chaos, there was one hero, and he is Greg Sankey, the commissioner of the SEC,” Finebaum remarked. “What he did with the backing of 15 other presidents helped preserve the integrity of a great league in a time when there is just absolute chaos and moral decay in our game. He stopped what would have been one of the worst moments in our history.”
It remains uncertain if LSU will eventually add Wright or Harris to its roster later in the season.
