The Incident at Canfield Fair
Authorities have identified Patrick Havas, 38, as the suspect who attempted to charge at Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, during a campaign stop. The incident took place at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, where Havas knocked over several audience members to reach Acton, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Havas was found with a Taser and two pistols but did not draw any weapons during the event. He is currently held at Mahoning County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and assault.
Amy Acton is competing against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in November’s election to succeed Governor Mike DeWine.
Details Surrounding the Offender
The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office reported that Havas recorded the incident with his cellphone as he forced his way through the crowd in the Democratic Party tent. Voter records indicate Havas is not affiliated with a political party, although he participated in a GOP primary in 2016.
Havas is a licensed nurse and has a history of legal issues, including a 2008 arrest for disorderly conduct.
Response from Law Enforcement
The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s security detail managed to detain Havas promptly. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene mentioned that Havas caused two older individuals on mobility scooters to fall during the commotion. Although Havas carried handguns and brass knuckles, the weapons remained holstered.
Investigations continue, with potential charges pending consultation with the County Prosecutor.
Political and Community Reactions
In a statement, Acton’s campaign communications director, Addie Bullock, emphasized gratitude for law enforcement’s swift action and condemned the chaos and hostility faced.
Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy also criticized the incident as “completely unacceptable,” emphasizing that political discourse should remain free from threats and violence.
Governor Mike DeWine and Senator Jon Husted echoed these sentiments, expressing their concerns over the attempted attack and commending law enforcement’s quick response.
“Violence or the threat of violence at political or public events is always unacceptable,” Governor DeWine stated.
The Mahoning County Republican Party similarly condemned the disruption and praised officers for restoring order.
Clarification
An earlier version of this article incorrectly described Patrick Havas as a registered Republican. Current voter records show no party affiliation.
