Craig Carton has criticized Michigan Wolverines fans for their celebration after a controversial victory over the Western Michigan Broncos. The game ended with a 13-12 win for Michigan, but not without debate. A second Hail Mary attempt was granted to Bryce Underwood, as officials ruled that a Western Michigan player had touched his initial throw. This allowed Underwood to connect with J.J. Buchanan for the decisive score.
Carton questioned the fans’ decision to storm the field, suggesting that such enthusiasm was unwarranted. Speaking on this topic, Carton said, “The notion of adding time to give Michigan another chance was troubling enough, but seeing fans rush the field like they had defeated a top-ranked team was even more perplexing.”
“Despite Michigan’s reputation as a leading educational institution, the reaction from 18 to 27-year-olds that evening spoke volumes. Storming the field for narrowly beating a team and relying on a contested decision reflects poorly on the student body,” Carton noted.
The Wolverines went into the game ranked 16th, facing a team from the Mid-American Conference that has never beaten a top 20 Associated Press team. Carton emphasized that the performance was not one to be celebrated.
Western Michigan’s history shows one AP poll ranking, achieved in 2016 under P.J. Fleck. A win over Michigan would have marked a historic moment for the Broncos. However, the Big Ten and Mid-American Conferences defended the decision to add time, citing that a Broncos player contacted the ball while out of bounds.
Carton concluded by reminding Michigan fans of the importance of perspective. “Celebrating a win that came with controversy is embarrassing,” he remarked.
Michigan now turns to their upcoming match against Oklahoma, bringing questions about Underwood’s role as the primary quarterback.
