Former aides of President Obama, who host the ‘Pod Save America’ podcast, sparked controversy on Tuesday with remarks about President Donald Trump’s possible death from heart disease or old age.
During the podcast, co-host Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for Obama, shared audience questions starting with one from Vanessa on Facebook. The question read, “Is there anyone that can stop this orange piece of s—?!!!” This set the tone for the discussion.
Tommy Vietor, another ex-Obama aide, humorously suggested that Iran was “doing a pretty good job” in relation to President Trump. Favreau then expressed skepticism about anyone stopping Trump.
Vietor continued with remarks predicting that “Father Time” would ultimately affect President Trump. He quipped about heart disease, saying it “always got a shot,” and predicted that age would eventually catch up.
Jon Lovett, a former speechwriter for Obama and Hillary Clinton, added that the “hardness of the veins” is ultimately an issue everyone faces.
Favreau wrapped up the discussion by imagining a future where such questions would disappear with the passage of time. This led Dan Pfeiffer, a former communications director for Obama, to ask whether they would then pursue “real jobs,” and Favreau affirmed.
Criticism over the conversation was voiced by Theo Wold, a former assistant attorney general and Trump’s White House deputy assistant, who saw this dialogue as indicative of changing societal standards. He expressed concern over the perceived normalcy of publicly speculating on a president’s death.
Morgan Murphy, a former Pentagon press secretary, also weighed in, denouncing the comments’ lack of decency. He highlighted Favreau’s admission of the tone of their audience’s questions and criticized it as a reflection of today’s Democratic attitudes.
Despite past assassination attempts, rhetoric that anticipates President Trump’s death, even through natural causes, has attracted criticism. Murphy pointed out that prayer for authorities should not depend on party divides and emphasized historical examples of grace even during divisive times.
The discussion underscores the polarized political environment and the discourse surrounding presidential leadership.
