Phil Barber’s Testimony
During court proceedings, Phil Barber addressed claims about the lack of affordable lodging near the Charleston County Courthouse. Barber pointed out that there are nine budget-friendly hotels in Mount Pleasant, just a 15-minute drive from the courthouse. He also mentioned that parking is accessible and that hotel price hikes on weekends would not affect weekday court sessions.
Judge’s Decision
A South Carolina judge agreed to Alex Murdaugh’s request to transfer the venue for his double-murder retrial. The trial will now take place in Sumter County, as ruled by Judge Debra McCaslin. The defense argued that the original trial in Colleton County was compromised by significant media coverage.
Judge McCaslin stated that Sumter County ensures a fair trial with adequate security, courtroom facilities, and technological support for the proceedings.
Context of Retrial
Alex Murdaugh will be retried for the June 7, 2021, shooting deaths of his wife and son. His initial conviction was overturned after findings revealed jury tampering by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill.
The decision followed the South Carolina Supreme Court’s recognition that Murdaugh’s rights were infringed upon during his 2023 trial, leading to overturned convictions and life sentences.
Proceedings and Charges
At his 2023 trial, Murdaugh admitted to deceiving investigators about his whereabouts before the shootings. However, he denies responsibility for the killings.
