LIV Golf Files for Bankruptcy Amid Funding Withdrawal
LIV Golf, operating for five years, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New Jersey. This move suspends its current business model. The decision comes after the early ending of its 2026 season in Indianapolis, triggered by its primary financial backer’s withdrawal.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) ceased its financial support in April. The fund aims to allocate resources towards domestic projects and manage financial challenges arising from the regional conflict with Iran. Consequently, PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan stepped down from LIV’s board.
Between 2021 and 2026, LIV invested between $5 billion and $8 billion. The bankruptcy documents reveal that the league owes millions in unpaid compensation to top players like Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Cam Smith.
The organization has laid off most of its staff and left event contractors unpaid. It also faces a lawsuit from the Premier Golf League concerning breach of confidence and conspiracy. LIV’s financial health worsened significantly as it may run entirely out of funds.
PIF has provided an emergency fund of $50 million to assist LIV in covering its expenses and maintaining operations amid the bankruptcy process. A potential restructuring plan, known as “LIV 2.0,” could influence the league’s future.
Under the proposed plan, BC Partners, a London-based private equity firm with links to GSE Worldwide, would potentially finance a league relaunch in 2027. This plan suggests granting majority ownership of the league to the players.
LIV CEO Scott O’Neil proposed a new event format featuring 75-player fields, 72-hole tournaments, cuts, Monday qualifiers, and a national team structure. This mirrors the traditional tour setup that LIV initially aimed to disrupt.
Chapter 11 proceedings are anticipated to annul existing player contracts. LIV Golf’s journey from a financially powerful new entrant to a bankrupt organization highlights the complexity and risks inherent in professional sports ventures.
