LSU Finalizes Roster in Face of Legal Uncertainty
LSU completed its roster for the upcoming season despite ongoing legal challenges with the Southeastern Conference (SEC). After several court appearances involving athletes such as Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, LSU decided against adding these players to the roster.
LSU head coach Lane Kiffin finalized the team by including Gabriel Reliford and Aidan Anding, reaching the limit of 105 players. The decision came amidst a scheduled SEC request for a temporary restraining order in Alabama federal court.
Legal Battles against LSU
The SEC accused LSU of lacking control over head coach Lane Kiffin, potentially leading to an expulsion vote. This legal confrontation follows Wright and Harris modifying their complaints to involve the SEC as a defendant.
Last week’s hearing led to a judge granting an injunction to Wright and Harris, with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey testifying. Subsequently, the SEC lodged a lawsuit in federal court against LSU.
“Did you authorize the SEC to sue LSU and coach Lane Kiffin?” asked attorney Tony Clayton, addressing Sankey.
Sankey cited the conference’s right to decide membership through freedom of association.
LSU’s Decision Impact on Upcoming Hearing
Despite LSU’s decision concerning Harris and Wright, a hearing on Wednesday will determine the SEC’s request for a temporary restraining order. The request aims to enforce rules governing professional athletes returning to college sports.
The SEC stated that the filing defends governance rights and ensures competition rules are upheld within the conference.
Kiffin’s Perspective on Player Exclusions
LSU’s Lane Kiffin discussed the difficulties of not including Wright and Harris on the roster, emphasizing his relationship with Wright from their time at Ole Miss. Kiffin faced criticism but focused on making decisions he believed were right for the athletes.
Kiffin recounted emotional moments, like Wright supporting him during a team meeting when leaving Ole Miss.
Accusations of Institutional Control Issues
The SEC raised concerns about LSU’s handling of the situation, suggesting the university lacks control over Kiffin and the football program.
“Expressed great concern that Defendants [President Wade] Rousse and [Athletic Director Verge] Ausberry have no meaningful control over Defendant Kiffin or the football program at LSU,” the SEC stated in their filing.
With neither Wright nor Harris returning, focus shifts to what repercussions LSU may face amid this legal conflict.
