On Tuesday, a Colorado judge ordered a significant increase in bond for murder suspect Barry Morphew. Initially set at $3 million, his bond is now $10 million cash only. This change follows his arrest by Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies the previous week.
The judge expressed concern about Morphew’s “capacity to commit new offenses while on bond.” She highlighted his apparent disregard for the court’s authority and noted that his actions suggest he would prioritize personal convenience over compliance.
Morphew appeared in Alamosa County Court for a bond hearing on September 8, 2026. The arrest occurred in unincorporated Boulder County on September 3, based on an Alamosa County warrant for failure to comply with bond conditions. Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies arrested him at around 9:11 p.m., and he was taken into custody without incident.
His arrest came shortly after prosecutors filed a verified application to modify Morphew’s bond. A judge signed the order on September 3, issuing a bench warrant and setting the initial bond at $3 million cash only with nationwide extradition. Morphew appeared in chains, wearing a white and orange striped outfit at the bond hearing, where the bond was increased to $10 million cash only.
Prosecutors revealed that GPS data showed Morphew left his home under a work exception on August 26, but instead drove to Denver International Airport. Although his attorneys suggested he might have gone to pick up his daughter, prosecutors argued the trip violated his release terms, establishing him as an “extreme flight risk.”
GPS data also indicated Morphew visited various locations in Denver, including a steakhouse, Whole Foods, and a liquor store. He was tracked near hotels and a mall before moving towards East 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, where he was involved in a hit-and-run incident.
The incident, captured in video footage, showed Morphew near 8th and Colorado offering cash instead of identification or insurance information before leaving the scene.
Court records now show prosecutors reviewing his GPS data for potential release violations. Morphew continues to await trial for first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. He has pleaded not guilty and maintains he did not kill her.
