Pope Leo XIV, known for addressing global issues like immigration and warfare, has expanded his focus to the realm of artificial intelligence (A.I.). As the first pope from the United States, Leo challenges influential figures in Silicon Valley, urging ethical considerations in technology development.
On Monday, the Vatican released Leo’s papal document titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” or “Magnificent Humanity,” marking a defining moment in his papacy. This document stands as the pope’s most significant moral stance on A.I., aiming to incorporate Catholic moral principles into a highly secular and predominantly American industry.
In his writing, Pope Leo posed critical questions to the conscience of humanity: What future do we envision? What direction should we take as a community? He urges a reevaluation of the role of A.I., advocating for its ‘disarmament’ akin to the church’s support for nuclear disarmament. Leo calls for A.I. to be liberated from becoming a tool of control and harm.
The document’s unveiling was a major event at the synod hall. Collaborating with EWTN, an influential American Catholic network, the Vatican presented the document with vibrant yellow banners and an engaging video introduction.
