The LSU Tigers have recently decided to withdraw their plan to appoint former NFL players to their roster. This decision arises after Coach Lane Kiffin and LSU officials faced scrutiny from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which even considered the expulsion of the Tigers from the conference.
A vote on potential expulsion is set for Thursday. However, widespread sentiment seems to favor maintaining LSU’s membership within the SEC. LSU President Wade Rousse has referred to the debate over professional players rejoining college teams as a “moot” issue.
Despite the ongoing controversy, rivals of LSU continue to enjoy the backlash faced by the Tigers in the press. During “The Aggie Football Hour” on Texas A&M radio, head coach Mike Elko assured fans that LSU remains part of the SEC. “LSU will be in the SEC,” he stated, as reported by TexAgs. He predicted that LSU would be prepared for their upcoming game in Baton Rouge.
Elko compared the SEC’s actions to parental discipline toward a rebellious child. “This is just a little bit of…parenting…going on right now,” he remarked. While this statement likely irritated some LSU supporters, it aligns with current events.
LSU and Kiffin previously attempted to recruit professional players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, citing conflicting court rulings about athletes’ eligibility for an extra year within the 2022 recruiting class. The conference responded with threats of expulsion amidst broad outrage among other member schools.
Adding fuel to the fire, during a halftime interview on Saturday, Kiffin hinted at the ongoing scenario. “Imagine if we had NFL players,” he commented, while his team led 31-3. The SEC countered LSU’s imagination with the factual implications of a future devoid of traditional rivalries, to which LSU responded negatively.
