Rhode Island State Representative David Morales, a 27-year-old democratic socialist, achieved a notable victory in the Democratic primary, defeating incumbent Providence Mayor Brett Smiley. Morales, who had the endorsement of Senator Bernie Sanders, secured his win by approximately 8 percentage points, earning 54% of the vote against Smiley’s 46%. If successful in the upcoming general election, Morales would become the youngest mayor in Providence’s history.
In his victory speech, Morales emphasized the skepticism he faced. He remarked, “Few believed that a 27-year-old democratic socialist could overcome significant financial and corporate real estate challenges. Yet, we confronted these and emerged victorious.” He delivered parts of his speech in Spanish, reinforcing his inclusive approach.
Smiley, aged 47, focused on his experience during his term, particularly handling incidents like the Brown University shooting. Despite his efforts, Morales’ campaign attracted support due to its progressive platform, which included initiatives like rent control and affordable housing expansion.
The upcoming general election will see Morales facing Republican nominee Dave Talan, 77. Given that the Democrats dominate the registered voter base in Providence and hold all council seats, Morales is strongly positioned to succeed.
State Rep. Morales, who previously made Rhode Island history as its youngest state legislator at 22, ran on a progressive agenda. His platform attracted endorsements from notable figures such as Rep. Ro Khanna and former Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza. His campaign sought to address rising living costs by targeting issues like rent hikes and advocating tax increases for polluters and corporate landlords.
Morales emphasized his commitment to governance rooted in partnership with Providence residents, stating, “The same way that we campaigned, we are going to govern — in coalition, side by side with our neighbors.”
Rent stabilization was a significant topic in the primary, with a proposed cap on rent increases being central to the discussion. Although Mayor Smiley vetoed a council-approved measure to limit rent hikes to 4% annually, Morales championed rent control as a means of addressing housing affordability and ensuring justice for residents.
Morales also championed policies to protect immigrant communities in Providence, opposing stringent federal immigration enforcement. He advocated for the city to act as a sanctuary for undocumented individuals, highlighting his personal connection as the son of a Mexican immigrant mother.
