Pope Leo XIV’s Message on Artificial Intelligence
Pope Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States, has been vocal about issues such as immigration crackdowns and wars. Recently, he addressed the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, targeting Silicon Valley’s influential figures.
In his encyclical titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” or “Magnificent Humanity,” Leo XIV emphasized the need for Catholic moral values in the tech industry, which is largely secular and American. The document, released at the Vatican, seeks to provide a significant moral perspective on AI from a religious leader.
Challenges for Humanity
The encyclical raises fundamental questions about the path humanity is taking. “Crucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided: Where are we going? Toward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves?” Leo wrote. These questions prompt reflection on the direction humanity should pursue as a community.
AI Disarmament
Leo XIV called for the “disarmament” of AI, likening it to the church’s stance on nuclear disarmament. He urged that AI be freed from becoming a tool of domination, exclusion, and death. His speech highlighted the importance of ensuring AI contributes positively to society.
The document’s release involved an event styled with vibrant themes, featuring a video produced with EWTN, an American Catholic network, emphasizing the global reach of the message.
