A 62-year-old engineer from Texas, Andrew James Wimsatt, was fatally stabbed while sitting on a park bench in Round Rock, Texas, shortly after visiting his mother at a nearby nursing home. The incident occurred on September 7, and authorities have arrested a local man, Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu, aged 26, in connection with the murder and theft.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office reported that the murder was captured on surveillance video. Wimsatt, identified in the video, sat down on the bench at approximately 11 a.m. A man, believed to be Ogbodiegwu, approached him from behind and repeatedly stabbed him in the neck. Despite Wimsatt’s struggle, he was unable to fend off the attacker, who then wiped the blood on his shirt and left the scene.
“The crime, to me, is so heinous and shocking that I’m still trying to comprehend it,” said Greg Gutfeld, who had previously connected with Wimsatt through a former show, “Red Eye.”
Wimsatt held a Ph.D. in civil engineering and was an executive producer of the Penn Jillette horror/comedy “Director’s Cut.” He worked for the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and maintained ties to various Fox News personalities. He was described as a fan who became a friend by Kat Timpf, a Fox News contributor. They had developed a friendship over the years, meeting for lunch and keeping in frequent contact.
Wimsatt was found by a witness who called 911. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigators traced Ogbodiegwu’s steps, recovering prints and other evidence, like bloody clothes and the alleged murder weapon. Upon confrontation, Ogbodiegwu claimed he had a twin brother, though he could not provide a name.
Benedict Ogbodiegwu has a criminal record dating back to at least 2017, with charges including theft and carrying fake identification. He has two prior arrests in this year alone, involving theft. Before his arrest for the murder, he was last released from county jail on June 9, following incarceration between January and April.
Ogbodiegwu is currently held on a $1 million bond, with a court date set for October 8 at 1:30 p.m. Greg Gutfeld expressed a strong view on the need for accountability, stating, “I believe everyone who allowed the person who killed him to roam free like that, deserve severe accountability.”
