The Chicago Cubs faced a challenging situation with their bullpen as they opened a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cubs fans felt uneasy early on when Konnor Griffin hit a triple and scored on Oneil Cruz’s single off Shota Imanaga. With 27 outs left, the Cubs seemed set for a fifth straight loss.
Catcher Carson Kelly provided a crucial play by catching Cruz as he attempted to steal second base. After a lengthy review, the call was upheld, helping Imanaga regain his confidence. This set the stage for a strong performance, aided by Alex Bregman and the Cubs offense, resulting in a 12-2 victory at Wrigley Field.
Kelly’s caught stealing was significant, as Imanaga noted, stating through an interpreter, “If he hadn’t done that, that game could have spiraled.” Following this play, Imanaga contained further damage and maintained the game within reach as the Cubs offense awoke. They scored three runs in the second inning, powered by Kelly’s two-run double.
The Cubs added two more runs in the following inning before Bregman delivered a decisive blow with a two-run home run. Cubs manager Craig Counsell commented, “Breggy’s homer obviously kind of changed the game, put it out of reach.” Bregman finished 3-for-4, continuing his impressive second-half performance. Despite earlier struggles, he now boasts an .800 OPS and leads the charge for a powerful Cubs lineup.
Kelly’s two-run double in the second inning, along with the overall offensive output of 16 hits in the game, has given the Cubs hope. The win placed them half a game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL wild-card spot.
Injury updates provided insights into several key players. Shortstop Dansby Swanson is on track to return following a rehab assignment. Ian Happ left the game with toe discomfort but was removed as a precaution. Right-hander Edward Cabrera may rejoin the team, while Shelby Miller is nearing a return after right elbow surgery.
Left-hander Justin Steele continues to work back from left elbow surgery, and more innings are needed before a potential major-league return. Phil Maton underwent knee debridement, aiming for recovery after posting a 6.18 ERA this season.
