Pink recently faced criticism for her response to Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian comments at a concert. The rapper made remarks during his performance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on September 4. This act included his anti-Israel song, Hind’s Hall, where he repeatedly chanted ‘Free Palestine’ as footage from the Gaza conflict played in the background.
This performance drew criticism from fans and organizations. An Instagram page named ‘Stop Antisemitism’ shared a video slamming Macklemore, calling his actions ‘awful’. Pink then shared this video on her Instagram story, sparking backlash from those who viewed her as pro-Israel.
Initially, Pink did not explicitly share her stance on the issue. On September 11, she addressed the controversy in an Instagram post, expressing her thoughts clearly. She explained that her repost was not a statement of agreement but acknowledged misunderstanding it could cause. Pink emphasized the importance of expressing her own opinions instead.
I’d rather be disagreed with for what I actually said than hated for what anybody else wrote.
Pink, identifying as Jewish, clarified her stance. She stated she did not represent Israel or any government. She reiterated her belief that Hamas is a terrorist group and stressed the need for protecting innocent lives everywhere.
Pink mentioned her previous work with UNICEF, helping children on both sides of the conflict. She emphasized that she would not simplify the complex issue in an Instagram post nor support slogans for popularity. Her reaction targeted Macklemore’s actions rather than his message.
Recalling past incidents, she discussed Macklemore’s performance at the Grammys in 2014. While she supported his song Same Love for its message, she criticized a controversial costume he later wore, which many found antisemitic.
Pink further explained her concerns about Macklemore’s actions during his recent concert. She conveyed fear and discomfort it caused within the Jewish community.
That scared me, and it scared people I love.
She stressed the importance of expressing her genuine fears without being misrepresented or accused of supporting harmful ideologies.
Pink’s statement detailed her longstanding commitment to advocacy. She mentioned her 2006 protest song, Dear Mr. President, related to the Iraq War. She acknowledged the personal toll of standing up for beliefs but affirmed her determination to do so.
Addressing critics, Pink clarified she does not expect agreement but wants safety for all, regardless of background, at public events. She offered to discuss her views further, inviting others to ask her directly.
Concluding her post, Pink referenced the significant occasions of 9/11 and Rosh Hashanah. She shared personal traditions of celebrating these events, reflecting her Jewish heritage.
Meanwhile, Macklemore defended his performance, citing a desire for equal treatment for all humans as a fundamental principle.
