For the second game in a row, Oregon found itself in a tough contest against an unranked team. However, ranked sixth, the Ducks failed to create a fourth-quarter comeback. Oklahoma State delivered a surprising 39-31 win in Stillwater, ending their over a year-long winless streak in an impressive fashion.
The Cowboys, at a 24.5-point disadvantage after a 24-10 defeat to Tulsa, ended a 12-game losing run. They became the first FBS team to break a losing streak of at least ten games by defeating a top-10 opponent. ‘Everybody counted them out,’ stated Cowboys’ first-year coach Eric Morris emotionally, as fans celebrated the win at Boone Pickens Stadium. ‘They were told they weren’t good enough. I’m proud of these kids.’
Oregon’s errors in the fourth quarter contributed to their downfall. Running back Dierre Hill Jr. fumbled, and the Ducks couldn’t convert on a fourth and 8 from their 33, with 7 minutes left, trailing 36-31. Oklahoma State capitalized with a field goal.
Oklahoma State outperformed Oregon with 554 yards in total offense compared to 281 yards. They doubled the first downs, 25 to Oregon’s 12. Oregon coach Dan Lanning admitted, ‘We got our ass kicked in many areas. Credit to Coach Morris and his staff.’
This defeat likely affected Oregon quarterback Dante Moore’s Heisman pursuit. Despite scouts from 13 NFL teams observing, Moore completed only 5 out of 15 passes for 45 yards in the first half. While he scored two touchdowns in the second half, Oklahoma State’s quarterback, Drew Mestemaker outshone him with 317 yards and two touchdowns. ‘He’s a dog,’ Morris praised. There’s talk of him as a top quarterback in this year’s class.’
Mestemaker secured the lead with a remarkable 10-yard touchdown scramble, reminiscent of Fernando Mendoza’s iconic score for Indiana’s national victory last year. ‘I was letting it fly,’ said Mestemaker. ‘I felt airborne for ages, but landing didn’t matter as long as I scored.’
Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Young also scored a touchdown, while Oregon struggled to maintain its unblemished record against unranked teams. Previously, the Ducks had never lost in 35 games against such opponents under Lanning.
This unexpected outcome follows last week’s close match where Oregon barely won over Boise State, a 25-point underdog, with a 34-27 score. These events reduced Oregon’s ranking from second to sixth. Last year, Oregon dominated Oklahoma State 69-3, marking their biggest win against a Power Four team. Before this match, Oregon held the longest 12-game road win streak in the country.
The game experienced a 90-minute delay due to thunderstorms and lightning in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
