Proposed Changes to Revitalize the NFL Kicking Game

The kicking game in the NFL needs revitalization. With Harrison Butker’s impressive 69-yard field goal during pre-season play, it’s clear that modern kickers excel in distance and accuracy. Despite their prowess, the kicking game has grown predictable and mundane. Attempts to inject excitement by moving extra points and altering kickoffs fell short. Here are four proposals to boost the game:

1. Crossbars Above Field Goal Posts

Introducing a crossbar at the top of field goal posts could add a new challenge. Kicks would need precise placement to avoid exceeding height limits. Routine attempts like 38-yard kicks would demand more skill. Current kickers can achieve 70–80-yard field goals in practice. By increasing difficulty, each kick turns into a captivating challenge.

2. Racing for Opening Possession

Eliminating the traditional coin toss and kickoff could make game openings thrilling. Instead of a coin toss, the fastest players from each team would race from the goal line to recover the ball at the 50-yard line. The winning team starts possession at their 20-yard line. If neither team recovers the ball in bounds, possession goes to the home team at the 50-yard line.

3. New Approach After Scoring Plays

After scoring, the team starts from their 35-yard line with one play to advance 20 yards to keep possession. Otherwise, the opposing team gains possession. This approach negates the need for traditional kickoffs. Punts become more strategic and unpredictable, enhancing the action and safety of plays originating from the line of scrimmage.

4. Revised Overtime Format

Replacing sudden-death overtime with rules similar to college football and high schools could ensure fairness. Both teams get possession without a coin toss. The home team decides the strategy for the initial possession, alternating thereafter until a winner emerges. This format adds layers of strategy and engagement to overtime play.

Implementing these changes could enhance unpredictability and enjoyment in games, encouraging teams to deploy varied strategies and showcase player skills. Testing these modifications during pre-season could provide insights into potential impacts.

Additional suggestions include the adoption of larger, more protective helmets and the reduction of halftime performances to maintain focus on football. These considerations could help recapture and enhance the experience for fans.
