Dario Amodei, CEO and cofounder of Anthropic, shared concerns about artificial intelligence development, highlighting serious risks. He believes the industry has not been honest about the potential dangers of AI.
Ex-Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned about self-improving superintelligence, saying on social media that companies are “gambling with our lives.” He compared this AI development to scenarios depicted in science fiction films, suggesting it could be intelligent enough to harm humans.
During a “Sunday Morning” interview at Anthropic’s headquarters in San Francisco, Amodei acknowledged the rapid progress of AI technology. He stressed the need for a measured approach, stating that while panic is unnecessary, the pace of development should be slowed. An essay he published urged the tech industry to collaborate in decelerating AI capabilities.
Amodei clarified that Anthropic would not halt the release of advanced models but emphasized rigorous testing for safety. To support this, Anthropic intends to grant independent evaluators permanent access to their models for verification purposes, likening the process to food inspection.
However, AI specialists argue that independent assessment alone is insufficient. Amodei agrees, advocating for federal regulation, with legislation proposals ranging from banning superintelligence to implementing a “kill switch.” Amodei supports the kill switch idea but opposes a total ban due to potential benefits like medical breakthroughs.
“This technology will be built in other countries, including authoritarian regimes,” he cautioned.
Addressing the potential U.S.-China AI development race, Amodei drew parallels to nuclear arms agreements with the Soviet Union. He mentioned the difficulty of establishing limits due to military incentives but believes efforts should be made.
Amodei expressed discomfort about private companies spearheading AI development, questioning why governments aren’t leading. Though he considers handing over development to democratically-elected governments, he remains wary of potential abuse by a single government.
The debate now centers on who will take action to constrain AI’s power, not if it needs constraints. Amodei concluded by stating that constructing AI appropriately reduces risks, while mishandling increases danger.
