Tatyana Ali: Advocate for Maternal Health
Actor and singer Tatyana Ali holds a quilting project called Baby Yams, which raises funds and awareness for Black and Indigenous birth workers. This effort is part of a broader movement to improve maternity health outcomes for these communities by addressing systemic racism in healthcare.
Impact of Personal Experience
Ali became vocal about reproductive justice after her traumatic experience during the birth of her son, Aszi, in 2016. She described facing “obstetric violence,” where her birth plan was ignored and she was physically restrained. A high-risk emergency procedure, usually a last resort, was performed on her, causing significant trauma.
Black Maternal Health: A Critical Issue
The U.S. has a high maternal mortality rate among developed countries, particularly affecting Black mothers, who are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than white mothers. Dr. Tamika Auguste, a maternal healthcare expert, stresses the importance of acknowledging and addressing racial bias in medical care.
“I can’t tell you how many Black women have said to me: ‘Hey Doc, don’t let me die,'” Auguste stated.
Efforts are underway to improve protocols addressing conditions prevalent among Black women, such as hypertension. Yet, access to care remains a significant barrier, with many regions lacking adequate maternity services.
Advancements and Challenges in Maternity Care
Ali’s work through Baby Yams supports Black and Indigenous maternal health by funding grants for birth workers. Her efforts aid midwives and doulas, who play crucial roles in providing maternity care. Research indicates midwife-led births result in fewer complications. Despite this, some states impose restrictions on midwives, limiting access to alternative birthing options.
Ali’s personal story underlines the necessity for systemic changes in maternity care, ensuring mothers have control and choices over their birthing experiences.
