A Georgia family experienced a frightening incident when their 2-year-old child suddenly suffered a severe allergic reaction to eggs during a routine breakfast. This event underscores the unpredictability of food allergies in young children.
Kendall Thomas, 22, described the morning as starting perfectly normal, as she and her husband joined their daughter for breakfast at her parents’ home. Everything seemed routine until the toddler developed a red rash shortly after consuming eggs—a food she had eaten many times without issue.
Thomas suspected an allergic reaction due to a minor incident months earlier. “There was a small reaction before, but the cause was unknown, and it was insignificant,” she explained. Despite the toddler eating eggs previously without consequences, the sudden rash hinted at an allergy.
Egg allergies are among the most common in the U. S., impacting about 0.9% of children overall, and 1.3% of those younger than 5. Researchers estimate some 2.7 million Americans are allergic to eggs. While minor reactions are prevalent, a significant number experience serious symptoms such as throat tightening, wheezing, and low blood pressure—all indicative of potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Following medical advice, Thomas initially administered diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to her daughter, but it was immediately vomited up. As a rash spread and coughing persisted, the family quickly headed to the hospital. En route, the situation worsened, and the child became unresponsive, vomiting again and ceasing to breathe.
In the car, Thomas’s mother took actions to clear the child’s airway until the toddler gasped, cried and screamed—a crucial sign of recovery. Upon reaching the hospital, medical staff quickly evaluated the child who stabilized within an hour. The child’s rash resolved, and she was alert.
Thomas recounted, “We received EpiPens to carry after this ordeal.” She emphasized that the incident should raise awareness among parents about potential hidden allergens in foods. Reflecting on the experience, Thomas expressed gratitude toward her husband, responders, and medical personnel.
She advised parents, “Introduce allergens cautiously. Life doesn’t have to change significantly; my daughter still enjoys her favorite treats, simply without eggs.” Adjusting to precautions, the family now ensures the toddler’s dietary needs are communicated while dining out and primarily eats at home.
