Chick-fil-A is renowned as one of the most challenging franchises to secure in America, with thousands of applicants vying for a limited number of opportunities each year. Julian Good, a Chick-fil-A owner in St. Charles, Illinois, shared insights on the ‘Founder Talk’ podcast about the unique business model and the challenges of becoming an owner-operator.
Franchise Application Process
The franchise fee for Chick-fil-A remains at $10,000, unchanged for half a century. Each year, approximately 100,000 individuals apply, with only about 200 achieving the role of owner-operator. Many applicants wait three to five years before being considered, indicating the process’s competitive nature, as described by Chick-fil-A.
Diverse Backgrounds and No Experience Required
Interestingly, Chick-fil-A does not require previous experience with the company. Over 25% of new operators have no prior involvement with Chick-fil-A. Applicants often come from varied professional fields such as manufacturing, health care, education, law enforcement, and retail.
Unique Franchise Structure
The structure differs from many franchises. Owners do not hold ownership of the restaurant or its equipment; Chick-fil-A retains these assets. This setup means operators do not gain equity or sell the business upon retirement. The focus for operators centers on restaurant management, employee development, and community service.
Julian Good emphasized that this non-traditional model contrasts sharply with other franchise systems. For instance, one cannot pass the business to heirs upon retiring — the operation reverts to Chick-fil-A.
Operating Schedule and Business Philosophy
The company culture includes closing all restaurants on Sundays. This practice aligns with the values Chick-fil-A holds dear. Good noted, ‘It’s a tradition that’s about glorifying God and giving back to the team and the community.’
