Celine Dion recently marked a special occasion by returning to the stage after six years, continuing her fight against stiff-person syndrome. The singer, now 58, began her 26-show residency at Paris’s Plenitude Arena on September 12, with an emotional performance starting with her song “On Ne Change Pas.” Videos shared online captured Dion tearing up as she expressed joy at seeing her audience once more. According to People, she remarked, “These are, of course, tears of joy. I’m so delighted to see you.”
The significance of Dion’s return was evident in her words. She shared, “I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!” She expressed gratitude to her fans for their support and patience during her absence, adding, “I am everything I am because you loved me,” before performing “Because You Loved Me.”
Dion’s career faced interruptions beginning in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to postponing the “Courage World Tour.” Then, in January 2022, Dion canceled the North American leg of the tour, citing ongoing recovery from severe muscle spasms.
During this challenging period, Dion adhered to her doctors’ advice, hoping to return to performing when her health allowed. Months later, she disclosed her diagnosis in an emotional video to her fans. In her message, Dion said, “As you know, I’ve always been an open book. And I wasn’t ready to say anything before — but I’m ready now. I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time. And it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and talk about everything that I’ve been going through.” Dion then announced her diagnosis with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare condition affecting approximately one in a million people.
The Cleveland Clinic defines SPS as a rare autoimmune disorder impacting the central nervous system. It typically begins with muscle stiffening in the trunk followed by rigidity in the legs and other muscles over time. Dion shared that this condition sometimes makes walking difficult and affects her vocal cords, hindering her singing capabilities.
Dion’s love and dedication to singing remain unwavering. She once said, “All I know is singing. It’s what I’ve done all my life. And it’s what I love to do the most.” Her progress was visible in 2024 during her appearance at the Grammy Awards, where she presented the album of the year and received a standing ovation. Her journey was further documented in the Prime Video documentary “I Am: Celine Dion.”
In July 2024, Dion performed “L’Hymne à l’amour” by Edith Piaf at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. This marked her first live performance since revealing her diagnosis, signaling possible future concerts. Dion’s Paris residency includes hits like “My Heart Will Go On,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” and “Because You Loved Me.”
Despite the challenges, Dion remains optimistic about performing. In 2023, she declared her determination, stating, “I’m not giving up. And I can’t wait to see you again.”
