Bettina Anderson, wife of Donald Trump Jr., responded to claims that a Russian oligarch paid for a significant portion of their wedding. She stated that the funds were for a separate celebration, not the wedding itself.
A ProPublica investigation reported that Umar Kremlev, linked to Putin and president of the International Boxing Association, funded many wedding costs. These included renting a private island and a fireworks show, paid through a Dubai entity linked to the IBA.
Anderson explained in an Instagram post that Kremlev hosted two events after their wedding, describing it as a generous gift. She emphasized the absence of political motives, stating, “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda.”
Labeling the report as “fake news,” she clarified that their private wedding was separate. Photos shared by her showed the truth of the celebrations.
ProPublica revealed Kremlev’s financial involvement in the wedding receptions held in the Bahamas, highlighting his influence and connections. Guests noted the conspicuous presence of Kremlev’s associates, who appeared infrequently in event photos.
A spokesperson for Trump Jr. confirmed Kremlev’s financial role, emphasizing his personal friendship, while Kremlev’s spokesperson echoed the sentiment. The White House and Russian authorities offered no comment.
Understanding Umar Kremlev
Umar Kremlev, originally named Umar Lutfulloyev, altered his surname in 2010. He carries a past with convictions for extortion and battery, and ties to Putin’s security service through the Night Wolves motorcycle club. Rising through Russian boxing, he became head of the Russian Boxing Federation by 2016.
Becoming the International Boxing Association’s president in 2020, Kremlev’s term saw financial backing from Gazprom and controversy over political influence linked to the Kremlin. The International Olympic Committee later revoked the IBA’s recognition due to governance issues.
Kremlev’s ventures include Russia’s sports betting sector, acquiring major car dealerships, and maintaining a public profile while garnering celebrity connections. Amid geopolitical tensions, Kremlev shifted IBA operations to the UAE, dodging sanctions that affected other Russian oligarchs. His increased engagement with the Trump family includes hosting Trump Jr. at an IBA event in Istanbul.
